Target intelligence / Profile preview
SARS-CoV-2 antigenic peptides are specific amino acid sequences derived from the structural proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, such as the Spike (S), Nucleocapsid (N), and Membrane (M) proteins (Grifoni et al., Cell, 2020). These peptides function as epitopes that are recognized by the host's immune system through presentation by Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) molecules (NIH, 2021). Unlike discrete drug targets such as the viral main protease or the ACE2 receptor, these peptides are not sites for pharmacological inhibition but are instead used as active components in peptide-based vaccines or as diagnostic reagents to monitor immune responses (PubMed, PMID: 32707096). Their primary biological role in a clinical context is to induce a targeted immune response, mimicking viral infection to establish immunological memory. In drug development, they are often synthesized and combined with adjuvants to enhance their ability to stimulate neutralizing antibodies and cellular immunity. Consequently, they represent a class of immunogens rather than a specific molecular target for small molecule or monoclonal antibody therapy.
Induction of adaptive immunity through the presentation of viral epitopes to T-cells and B-cells, leading to the production of neutralizing antibodies and cellular memory.
