Overview

SARS-CoV-2 antigens are viral proteins produced by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. These antigens, primarily the Spike (S) glycoprotein and Nucleocapsid (N) phosphoprotein, are key targets for diagnostic tests and immune responses. Antigen tests detect these proteins to diagnose current infection. Vaccines use the spike protein to elicit neutralizing antibodies, preventing viral entry into host cells. The presence of antibodies against these antigens can also be used to determine prior exposure to the virus.

Mechanism of action

Monoclonal antibodies: Neutralize the virus by binding to antigens, preventing cell entry. Vaccines: Stimulate the production of antibodies and T cells that target viral antigens. Antiviral agents: Inhibit the function of viral proteins essential for replication.
