Target intelligence / Profile preview
The SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoprotein is a large, trimeric, class I fusion protein found on the surface of the virus. It mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and facilitating membrane fusion. The Omicron BA.5 variant features numerous mutations in its spike protein compared to earlier strains, particularly within the receptor-binding domain (RBD), which impact both ACE2 affinity and antibody recognition.
Binds to ACE2 receptor to mediate viral entry; conformational changes lead to membrane fusion.
