The SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein is a large, trimeric, class I fusion protein found on the surface of the virus that mediates viral entry into host cells by binding to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and facilitating membrane fusion. The Omicron variant's spike protein has a high number of mutations compared to previous variants. These mutations remodel both the N-terminal domain (NTD) and receptor-binding domain (RBD), altering antigenic surfaces. Structural changes confer resistance to neutralizing antibodies and it requires higher levels of ACE2 for efficient membrane fusion.
