SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 Receptor Binding Domain (SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 RBD)

Target
SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 RBD
Molecular classification
Viral protein, Glycoprotein, Receptor Ligand
01

Overview

The SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) is a critical component of the viral spike protein responsible for binding to the human ACE2 receptor. This interaction mediates viral attachment and entry into host cells, initiating the infection process. As such, it is a key target for vaccine and therapeutic development. The RBD undergoes conformational changes to expose its ACE2 binding site and is subject to glycosylation and proteolytic processing. Its sequence also varies between SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, which affects binding affinity to ACE2 and antibody neutralization.
