Scaffold-mediated sustained release of active molecules to ocular tissues

Molecular classification
Other (drug delivery system), Biomaterial scaffold
01

Overview

Scaffold-mediated sustained release to ocular tissues refers to the use of biodegradable or otherwise long-lasting biomaterial scaffolds (often hydrogels, microparticles, nanoparticles, or polymer implants) to deliver drugs slowly and locally within or on the eye, in order to enhance drug residence time, minimize dosing frequency, and improve therapeutic efficacy for various eye diseases. These systems are not drug targets but serve as enabling technologies to overcome anatomical and physiological barriers of the eye, such as rapid tear turnover, conjunctival and corneal barriers, and blood-retinal barriers, by providing controlled and sustained exposure of drugs to target ocular tissues.
