SCAN domain containing 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000285794) is a noncoding genomic sequence with high homology to the functional SCAN domain containing 1 gene, but it is incapable of producing a functional protein product due to disabling mutations or the loss of regulatory elements required for gene expression. Pseudogenes like this are classified as nonfunctional remnants of gene evolution, often with sequence similarity to known genes but lacking the ability to express protein or, in most cases, exert known biological effects. In rare cases, some pseudogenes may have regulatory roles as noncoding RNAs; however, such a function is not described for SCAN domain containing 1 pseudogene.
