SCAN domain-containing protein 1 (SCAND1) is a protein coded by the SCAND1 gene located on chromosome 20. It possesses an isolated, conserved protein–protein interaction domain (the SCAN box) but lacks the zinc finger domain typical of most SCAN family proteins. SCAND1 functions as a transcriptional regulator by heterodimerizing with full-length SCAN domain transcription factors like myeloid zinc finger 1 (MZF1), modulating their activity and the broader regulatory landscape of gene expression. Functionally, SCAND1 suppresses epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition and can inhibit proliferation and migration in cancer cells, particularly prostate cancer, where it acts as a tumor suppressor and is associated with favorable patient outcomes[1][3][4][5]. These properties make it a potential biomarker and candidate therapeutic target in oncology, although no direct pharmacological modulators are currently known.
