Scavenger Receptor Class B Type I (SR-BI) is a cell surface glycoprotein predominantly expressed in the liver and steroidogenic tissues. It plays a central role in HDL metabolism by mediating the selective uptake of cholesteryl esters from circulating HDL particles into hepatocytes. SR-BI facilitates the transfer of cholesteryl esters from HDL into liver cells without internalizing or degrading the entire particle, a process crucial for reverse cholesterol transport.
