Scavenger receptor class F member 2 (SCARF2) is a membrane-bound protein related to SCARF1 and is classified as a probable adhesion protein that mediates homophilic and heterophilic cellular interactions. Although similar to SCARF1 in sequence and domain structure, SCARF2 has little activity in internalizing or degrading modified low-density lipoproteins (LDL). It participates mainly in cell-cell adhesion via plasma membrane adhesion molecules. Mutations in the SCARF2 gene are associated with congenital disorders such as Van Den Ende-Gupta syndrome and congenital heart defects. SCARF2's main biological roles and clinical associations appear to relate to development and structural tissue integrity rather than classic receptor-mediated signaling or metabolism[1][2][6].
