Scavenger receptor cysteine-rich type 1 protein M160 (CD163L1) is a membrane protein from the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich (SRCR) superfamily, structurally characterized by twelve SRCR domains, a transmembrane region, and a cytoplasmic domain[1][3][7]. It is primarily expressed on subsets of tissue macrophages and is involved in endocytic uptake, likely through a clathrin-mediated pathway[2]. While sharing homology with the hemoglobin scavenger receptor CD163, CD163L1 shows a distinct expression pattern and does not bind classical CD163 ligands such as haptoglobin–hemoglobin complexes[2]. CD163L1 expression in macrophages is regulated by cytokines, being upregulated by IL-6 and IL-10 and downregulated by proinflammatory signals such as IL-4, IL-13, TNF-α, and LPS/IFN-γ[2]. Although its functions are not as well defined as CD163, it is postulated to act as a scavenger receptor important for resolution of inflammation, making it relevant for immunological and inflammatory research[2][3]. The protein is encoded by the CD163L1 gene (NCBI Gene ID: 283316)[1][3]. There is no evidence of direct drug targeting, biomarker status, or noted safety concerns at present.
