Schistosoma japonicum vaccine antigens are a diverse group of proteins derived from the helminth parasite Schistosoma japonicum, which are targeted for the development of prophylactic or transmission-blocking vaccines. These antigens include membrane-associated proteins like Sj23 (a tetraspanin), enzymes such as Glutathione S-transferase (SjGST), and structural proteins like Paramyosin (Sj97), all of which play vital roles in the parasite's survival, membrane integrity, and detoxification processes. In the context of disease, these antigens are used to induce host immune responses (both humoral and cellular) aimed at reducing the adult worm burden and inhibiting the production of eggs, which are the primary drivers of pathology and transmission in schistosomiasis. While several candidates have shown significant protective efficacy in animal models, including mice and water buffalo, no vaccine has yet been approved for human use. The development of these vaccines is a critical component of the One Health strategy to eliminate zoonotic schistosomiasis in endemic regions of Asia.
