Overview

The schistosome tegument is a specialized syncytial cytoplasmic layer that serves as the outer surface of Schistosoma parasites, acting as the primary interface with the host vascular environment (Skelly & Wilson, 2006, PubMed: 16722846). It is a highly dynamic structure bounded by a unique double-lipid bilayer, which is essential for nutrient uptake, osmoregulation, and protection against host immune and digestive mechanisms (Braschi & Wilson, 2006, PubMed: 16631105). The tegument plays a pivotal role in immune evasion by constantly renewing its surface and expressing proteins that modulate or mask the parasite from the host immune system (Moné et al., 2010, PubMed: 20847962). It is the principal target of the anthelmintic drug Praziquantel, which causes rapid calcium-dependent contraction and tegumental vacuolization, leading to the exposure of internal parasite antigens to host antibodies (Cioli et al., 2014, PubMed: 24507435). Due to its critical role in parasite survival and its direct exposure to the host bloodstream, the tegument is a primary focus for the development of both new schistosomicidal drugs and recombinant vaccines targeting surface proteins like SmTSP-2 (Hotez et al., 2010, PubMed: 20231882).
