Overview

The vitelline glands, or vitellaria, are specialized reproductive organs in female schistosomes responsible for producing vitellocytes, which are essential for egg formation (Collins et al., 2013). These cells provide the nutrients and the proteinaceous shell precursors, such as tyrosinase and eggshell proteins, required for the development of the parasite's embryo (Skelly & Shoemaker, 2001). Because the eggs are the primary cause of pathology in schistosomiasis—inducing granulomatous inflammation in host organs—the vitelline glands are a critical focal point for therapeutic intervention (Doenhoff et al., 2008). While the glands are a complex tissue system rather than a single molecular target, they are highly sensitive to anthelmintic drugs like praziquantel and artemisinins, which cause rapid degeneration of the vitelline follicles (Mehlhorn et al., 1981; Utzinger et al., 2001). Disruption of these glands effectively halts egg production, thereby reducing both the disease burden within the host and the transmission of the parasite.

Mechanism of action

Anthelmintic drugs disrupt the cellular integrity of the vitelline follicles, leading to the cessation of vitellocyte production and the inhibition of eggshell formation (Mehlhorn et al., 1981; Doenhoff et al., 2008).
