Overview

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) glycoprotein Gc is a major surface protein of the virus, belonging to the Orthobunyavirus genus. It is a type I transmembrane protein that functions as a class II membrane fusion protein, facilitating viral attachment to host cell receptors and mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane during entry [3, 6]. Gc is highly immunogenic and serves as the primary target for neutralizing antibodies, making it a critical focus for vaccine development [3, 10]. In ruminants, SBV infection leads to significant economic losses due to abortions, stillbirths, and severe congenital malformations known as arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly syndrome [11, 13]. Therapeutic strategies targeting Gc include the development of subunit and DNA vaccines that provide protective immunity and allow for the differentiation of infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA) [2, 14]. Furthermore, experimental antiviral peptides derived from the Gc sequence have demonstrated the ability to inhibit viral infection in vitro by interfering with the fusion process [6].
