Overview

Scorpion venom toxins are a complex group of disulfide-bridged peptides that primarily target voltage-gated ion channels, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride channels, leading to rapid disruption of the nervous and muscular systems (StatPearls, 2023). These toxins are the causative agents of scorpion envenomation, a condition characterized by autonomic storms, respiratory failure, and severe localized pain (PubMed, 2021). In clinical practice, these toxins are the direct targets of antivenom therapies, such as Anascorp, which employ purified antibody fragments to neutralize the toxins biological activity (FDA, 2011). Beyond their role in pathology, specific toxins like chlorotoxin are being explored for their high affinity for glioma cells, serving as potential scaffolds for targeted cancer diagnostics and therapeutics (UniProt, 2024). The high specificity of these peptides makes them invaluable tools in pharmacological research for mapping ion channel functions and developing novel analgesics (PubMed, 2022).
