SCP2 sterol-binding domain-containing protein 1 (SCP2D1) is a member of a family of lipid-binding proteins that contain the sterol carrier protein 2 (SCP2) domain. SCP2D1 is encoded by the SCP2D1 gene (formerly C20orf79, HSD22) and shows homology to classical SCP2 proteins, which bind and transfer cholesterol, fatty acids, and other lipids between intracellular membranes. It is primarily implicated in nonvesicular intracellular trafficking of cholesterol and other lipids, affecting lipid and cholesterol homeostasis and possibly contributing to certain metabolic or lipid-storage diseases. Unlike the canonical SCP2/SCpX proteins, SCP2D1's specific physiological and pathological roles are less well-characterized but may relate to diseases involving abnormal lipid handling, such as certain corneal dystrophies. SCP2D1 is classified structurally as a lipid-binding protein but is not an enzyme, receptor, transporter, or established therapeutic drug target at this time [1][2][3].
