Sebaceous follicle keratinocyte

Molecular classification
Other (Epithelial cell), Not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or canonical drug target class
01

Overview

Sebaceous follicle keratinocytes are the epithelial cells that line the hair follicles associated with sebaceous glands. These cells are a specialized subset of keratinocytes—the predominant cell type in the epidermis—responsible for forming a protective barrier against environmental insults such as pathogens, UV radiation, and dehydration[6][8]. Within sebaceous follicles, these keratinocytes play a key role in regulating the process of cornification and desquamation. Abnormalities in their function or differentiation can contribute to diseases like acne by promoting hyperkeratosis and clogging follicles with sebum produced by adjacent sebaceous glands[1][2]. While they are not considered classical therapeutic targets like receptors or enzymes, drugs such as topical retinoids act on these cells to normalize their growth and reduce comedone formation in acne therapy[1]. They also participate actively in immune responses within skin tissue through secretion of cytokines and chemokines that modulate inflammation[8]. Note: "Sebaceous follicle keratinocytes" is not a standard molecular target but rather refers to a specific population of skin epithelial cells; it is not classified as an individual protein or receptor suitable for direct pharmacological targeting.
