Overview

The sebaceous gland is a small, holocrine, lipid-producing organ located in the dermis and typically associated with hair follicles as part of the pilosebaceous unit[3][5][7][9]. Its primary function is the production and secretion of sebum—an oily substance composed of triglycerides, wax esters, squalene, and metabolites—which moisturizes, lubricates, and provides a physical and antimicrobial barrier for the skin and hair[1][3][5][7]. Sebaceous glands are controlled hormonally, particularly by androgens which stimulate growth and lipid synthesis through nuclear androgen receptors[1]. They are involved in the skin's immune defense, wound healing, and act as sites of local steroid metabolism[1][4][8]. Dysfunction or excess production of sebum is central to acne and other dermatological disorders[8].
