Sebaceous gland cell apoptosis induction

Overview

Sebaceous gland cell apoptosis induction refers to the initiation of programmed cell death in sebaceous gland cells, or sebocytes. This process is pharmacologically targeted in the treatment of acne, most notably by isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) and its metabolic product, all-trans retinoic acid. The mechanism involves upregulation of pro-apoptotic mediators such as NGAL (neutrophil gelatinase–associated lipocalin, encoded by LCN2), TRAIL (tumor necrosis factor–related apoptosis-inducing ligand), and activation of the caspase cascade. Transcription factors such as FoxO3a play a regulatory role in this pathway. Induction of sebocyte apoptosis results in decreased sebum production, a key therapeutic endpoint in acne management. This process is not a molecular target itself but results from modulation of various proteins and signaling cascades associated with cell death, making it a pharmacological effect rather than a discrete, druggable target.
