Sebocyte apoptosis is the programmed cell death of sebocytes, specialized epithelial cells in sebaceous glands. This process is essential for holocrine secretion, where mature sebocytes filled with lipids undergo apoptosis to release sebum. It is regulated by pro-apoptotic signals like isotretinoin and FoxO transcription factors and inhibited by survival pathways. Pharmacological modulation of sebocyte apoptosis, particularly with isotretinoin, is a key therapeutic strategy for acne vulgaris by reducing sebum production and gland size.
Induction of sebocyte apoptosis via RAR-dependent and independent mechanisms, upregulation of TRAIL and other pro-apoptotic genes, and reduction of anti-apoptotic Bcl2 expression.
