Sebum also supports antimicrobial defense via lipid composition and the production of antimicrobial peptides[4]. Its dysregulation plays a central role in skin disorders such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis, and interventions typically target the underlying cell types, enzymes (such as 5-alpha-reductase), or receptors (such as androgen receptor)—not “sebum production” as a direct molecular target[1][4][5].
