Sebum production is the result of lipid synthesis and secretion by sebaceous gland cells (sebocytes), occurring predominantly in the dermis and strongly regulated by hormones, notably androgens (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone)[1][5][6][7]. Sebum is an oily substance consisting of triglycerides, fatty acids, wax esters, and unique lipids like squalene and sapienic acid, serving to lubricate, moisturize, and protect the skin and hair[2][3][7]. The production process involves stem cell proliferation, sebocyte differentiation, active lipid synthesis, and cell death via holocrine secretion[3][5]. Sebum also supports antimicrobial defense via lipid composition and the production of antimicrobial peptides[4]. Its dysregulation plays a central role in skin disorders such as acne and seborrheic dermatitis, and interventions typically target the underlying cell types, enzymes (such as 5-alpha-reductase), or receptors (such as androgen receptor)—not “sebum production” as a direct molecular target[1][4][5].
