SEC13 homolog, nuclear pore and COPII coat complex component pseudogene 1 (SEC13P1)

Target
SEC13P1
Molecular classification
Pseudogene

Overview

SEC13P1 is classified as a processed pseudogene, meaning it is a noncoding DNA sequence derived from the parental SEC13 gene by retrotransposition—an mRNA from SEC13 was reverse-transcribed and integrated into a new location in the genome, specifically on chromosome 1. SEC13P1 does not code for a functional protein and does not act as a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter. While the function of most pseudogenes remains elusive, emerging evidence suggests some pseudogenes may regulate their parental gene or other protein-coding genes via noncoding RNAs, acting as decoys for microRNAs or affecting mRNA stability. However, there is currently no direct evidence that SEC13P1 has such regulatory functions or disease associations. It is thus considered a genomic relic rather than a functional drug target. Additional notes: - SEC13P1 is sometimes confused with its protein-coding parental gene, SEC13, which is a component of the nuclear pore and COPII coat complex, but SEC13P1 itself is not a protein nor a druggable target. - There are no known drugs, biomarkers, mechanisms of action, or safety concerns associated with SEC13P1. - The abbreviation SEC13P1 is canonical in the scientific literature. In summary: SEC13P1 is a human pseudogene and not a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter. There is nothing to suggest clinical relevance or molecular targeting utility, so any therapeutic targeting would be incorrect. The entry is correct as a pseudogene, but incorrect if considered a classical drug target.
