SNORC (Secondary ossification center associated regulator of chondrocyte maturation) is a highly conserved, cartilage-specific small membrane proteoglycan, encoded by the SNORC gene (also known as C2orf82 in humans)[2][4][5]. The protein is 120–121 amino acids long and is a type I single-pass transmembrane proteoglycan, mainly localized to the plasma membrane of chondrocytes, with an extracellular domain modified by chondroitin sulfate glycosaminoglycan chains[1][4]. SNORC expression is restricted to chondrocytes, with high expression in proliferating and pre-hypertrophic zones of developing cartilage and in the uncalcified zones of adult articular cartilage. Expression is regulated by a SOX9-responsive intronic enhancer, is upregulated during chondrogenesis and by BMP-2, and closely matches other cartilage matrix genes (e.g., Acan, Col2a1)[1][4]. SNORC's functional roles include contributing to regulation of chondrocyte maturation, cartilage development, and possibly maintaining chondrocyte phenotype, but its precise molecular function and signaling partners remain poorly understood[4][6][8]. There is no evidence that it is currently a direct therapeutic target or that it interacts with drugs. It is mainly used as a marker for cartilage-specific cell populations and cartilage-related research[4][8].
