Overview

Secreted modular calcium-binding protein 2 (SMOC2) is a **matricellular protein** of the SPARC family that is secreted into the extracellular matrix and plays a prominent role in the regulation of cell–matrix interactions, modulation of cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling[2][3]. SMOC2 contains key structural domains including a Kazal domain, two thyroglobulin type-1 domains, and two EF-hand calcium-binding domains, and is expressed in a wide variety of tissues. It is highly upregulated during embryonic development, wound healing, and in certain pathological states such as cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, where it promotes aggressive cellular behavior, matrix assembly, and angiogenesis[1][2][3]. SMOC2 has been implicated as a biomarker for disease states and is considered a **potential therapeutic target** for diseases involving aberrant tissue remodeling or malignancy, though no clinically established drugs currently target it directly.
