The secretin receptor is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) encoded by the SCTR gene in humans. It is the prototypical member of the class B (or family B) GPCR subfamily, also known as the secretin receptor family. This receptor specifically binds to and is activated by the peptide hormone secretin. Upon binding secretin, the receptor primarily activates adenylyl cyclase via Gs proteins, leading to increased intracellular cAMP levels. This signaling cascade regulates various physiological processes such as fluid secretion in pancreas and liver, inhibition of gastric acid secretion in stomach parietal cells, and pH regulation in duodenum. Alterations or dysregulation of SCTR signaling are implicated in diseases affecting biliary tract/liver function. Research continues into its role in gastrointestinal cancers due to its regulatory influence over cell proliferation pathways.
