Secretogranin III (SCG3) is a member of the chromogranin/secretogranin family of acidic secretory proteins, primarily found in endocrine and neuroendocrine cells, including the brain and pancreas[1][2][3][4][5]. It functions as a helper protein in the regulated secretory pathway, where it helps sort and package other peptides, such as chromogranin A and adrenomedullin, into secretory granules for proper hormone processing and release[1][2][3][4]. SCG3 is involved in processing neuropeptides important for appetite regulation and may also play a role in angiogenesis through the MEK/ERK pathway[4]. Its expression is altered in diseases involving neuroendocrine or astrocytic dysfunction, and aberrant accumulation has been observed in some neurodegenerative diseases[3][4]. SCG3 is not a classical drug target (e.g., receptor, enzyme) but may serve as a disease biomarker[3][4].
