Overview

Secretory carrier-associated membrane protein 4 (SCAMP4) is a member of the SCAMP family of integral membrane proteins implicated in membrane trafficking within secretory and endocytic carriers. SCAMP4 is distinct from other family members in that it is shorter (~25 kDa), lacking most of the N-terminal hydrophilic domain observed in other SCAMPs, but maintains the conserved four transmembrane core structure. SCAMP4 is widely expressed and is considered authentic based on mRNA and protein evidence. Like other SCAMPs, it is believed to function in regulating protein and vesicle transport through the endomembrane system but is currently not recognized as a therapeutic target nor directly targeted by known drugs. SCAMP4 is grouped with the "secretory carrier-associated membrane protein" family, integral to vesicle/membrane trafficking. Recent large-scale gene/protein databases do not list known drugs or direct targeting mechanisms for this protein. The clearest disease link is to a neurodevelopmental disorder, but its role as a direct drug or biomarker target remains unsubstantiated as of current evidence.
