Secretory Phospholipase A2 Group V (sPLA2-V) is an enzyme encoded by the PLA2G5 gene. It belongs to the sPLA2 family and catalyzes the hydrolysis of membrane glycerophospholipids, releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids. sPLA2-V plays a dual role, contributing to both pro-inflammatory lipid mediator production in cardiovascular disease and protective functions against certain infections through modulation of host cell membranes and immune cell function. It is expressed in smooth muscle cells, epithelial cells, and macrophages, and its activity is calcium-dependent. Varespladib is an inhibitor of sPLA2-V.
