Overview
The secretory translocon is a protein complex that facilitates the translocation of newly synthesized polypeptides across biological membranes, primarily into or across the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane in eukaryotes and the plasma membrane in prokaryotes. It serves as a central component of the secretory pathway, acting as a channel through which nascent proteins with specific signal sequences are either inserted into membranes or transported into cellular compartments. The core of the translocon is the Sec61 complex (eukaryotes) or SecYEG (prokaryotes).
