Overview

Sedative activity" denotes the pharmacological effect of inducing sedation, usually by depressing central nervous system activity, rather than referring to a specific molecule, receptor, or drug target. This activity is most commonly achieved via enhancement of GABAergic neurotransmission—especially by agonism or positive allosteric modulation of GABA-A receptors—but can also occur through other pathways depending on the drug class. Because "sedative activity" is an effect, not a molecular entity, it cannot be mapped to a unique canonical target in a structured biomedical ontology.
