Sedoheptulokinase (SHPK)

Sedoheptulokinase (SHPK) is an enzyme that catalyzes the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of sedoheptulose to sedoheptulose 7-phosphate, playing a role in glucose and carbohydrate metabolism and acting as a modulator of macrophage activation[1][2][3][5][9]. It is a member of the phosphotransferase enzyme family and is also known as CARKL and carbohydrate kinase-like protein. Loss-of-function mutations in SHPK are associated with sedoheptulokinase deficiency, a rare inborn error of metabolism; SHPK may also act as a genetic modifier in other metabolic diseases such as cystinosis[5]. No approved drugs or biomarkers are currently known for direct clinical targeting of SHPK.
