Selenite-Induced Crystallin Aggregation

Molecular classification
Protein aggregation, Oxidative stress response
01

Overview

Selenite-induced crystallin aggregation is a process where exposure to sodium selenite leads to the abnormal clumping of crystallin proteins in the lens of the eye. This aggregation, primarily affecting α-crystallin, reduces its chaperone function and results in the formation of light-scattering protein aggregates, causing cataracts. It is a well-established experimental model for studying age-related or oxidative-stress-driven cataractogenesis.
