Overview

Selenite ion (SeO3^2−) is a selenium-containing oxyanion structurally analogous to sulfite. It is commonly found as sodium selenite and produced by neutralizing selenous acid or dissolving selenium dioxide in water. Selenite is a reagent and supplement for providing selenium, especially to patients with deficiency. It is a redox-active compound participating in glutathione-dependent pathways and other reactions. It can substitute for phosphate in biological mineral structures (e.g., hydroxyapatite) and is involved in various metabolic processes, including microbial selenium metabolism. While not itself a drug target, it is pharmacologically relevant for selenium supplementation and occasionally as an adjunct in cancer therapy. Selenite is associated with both supplementation and toxicity risks, depending on dose and exposure.
