Overview

Selenocysteine insertion sequence-binding protein 2-like (SECISBP2L) is a paralog of SECISBP2 that binds SECIS (Selenocysteine Insertion Sequence) elements in the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of selenoprotein mRNAs[1][3][4]. SECISBP2L is distinct from SECISBP2 in both tissue expression and function: while both can bind SECIS elements, only SECISBP2L is robustly expressed in differentiating oligodendrocytes (OLs) of the central nervous system, where it is crucial for promoting the translation of DIO2 and enabling endogenous production of bioactive thyroid hormone T3, which in turn regulates OL differentiation and myelination[1]. Experimental evidence shows that full-length SECISBP2L facilitates selenoprotein translation in an SECIS-dependent manner, likely acting via recruitment of the selenocysteine-specific elongation factor (eEFSec) to support UGA-to-Sec recoding during translation[1][4]. There is currently no evidence that SECISBP2L is a direct therapeutic target or target of any approved drug; its function is primarily studied in the context of neurodevelopment and thyroid hormone regulation in the CNS[1][3][4].
