Selenophosphate synthetase 1 pseudogene 7 (SEPHS1P7) is a non-protein-coding segment of DNA resembling the functional gene selenophosphate synthetase 1. Like other pseudogenes, it may have originated from gene duplication or retrotransposition, but it has lost the ability to produce a functional protein due to disabling mutations. Although most pseudogenes are nonfunctional, some have regulatory roles as noncoding RNAs or microRNA decoys, affecting gene expression indirectly. There is no evidence that SEPHS1P7 serves a therapeutic, disease-related, or pharmacological role.
