The selenoprotein biosynthesis pathway is a specialized cellular process responsible for the synthesis of selenoproteins, which are proteins that incorporate the amino acid selenocysteine (Sec). Selenocysteine is co-translationally inserted into proteins at UGA codons, which normally signal translation termination. This recoding requires a dedicated set of molecular machinery and regulatory elements, enabling precise incorporation of selenium into key enzymes involved in antioxidant defense, redox regulation, thyroid hormone metabolism, immune function, fertility, and more. Disruption can lead to various pathologies due to loss or misregulation of these critical enzymes.
