Selenoprotein K pseudogene 1 (SELENOKP1)

Target
SELENOKP1
Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

**Selenoprotein K pseudogene 1 (SELENOKP1)** is a pseudogene; that is, a DNA sequence that closely resembles the functional selenoprotein K gene (SELENOK) but is rendered non-functional typically due to mutations that prevent transcription or translation[4]. SELENOKP1 does not encode an active protein product or participate in canonical biological pathways or drug interactions. Pseudogenes, by definition, are generally not considered therapeutic targets because they do not produce functional proteins[4]. While its parental gene, Selenoprotein K (SELENOK), is involved in immune response and the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation of misfolded proteins[1][5], the pseudogene does not have those properties or roles. The existence of SELENOKP1 is noted as a nonfunctional genetic element and not as a biological or therapeutic target.
