This pathway involves specific translational machinery, including the SECIS element in mRNA, SECIS-binding protein 2 (SBP2), a specialized tRNA (tRNA[Ser]Sec), selenocysteine synthase (SecS), selenophosphate synthetase, and unique elongation factors[1][3]. The process is essential for the synthesis of all selenoproteins, which play roles in antioxidant defense, thyroid function, and cellular homeostasis[2][4]. Defects in elements of selenoprotein synthesis are linked to diseases such as progressive cerebello-cerebral atrophy and metabolic syndromes[2]. Because it represents a biological process and not a druggable protein or receptor, "selenoprotein synthesis" is not considered a therapeutic target in the conventional sense[3][5].
