Overview

Semaphorin-6C is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the semaphorin family, which is broadly involved in axon guidance and neuronal development[1][2][3][4][8]. It binds to plexin A receptors and is implicated in guiding proprioceptive peripheral neurons, acting primarily as a repellent signal to direct axonal growth away from certain regions, and serves as a 'stop' signal for dorsal root ganglion neurons[1][2][4][8]. It is expressed developmentally in the central and peripheral nervous system, and is thought to play roles in the regulation of neural circuit formation, maintenance, and neural regeneration following injury[1][2][3][8]. SEMA6C has been associated with conditions such as cone-rod dystrophy and lipoid proteinosis[2].
