Senescence associated long non-coding RNA 3 (SALRNA3, XLOC_025918) is part of a subgroup of long non-coding RNAs whose expression levels change markedly during cellular senescence, particularly in human WI-38 fibroblasts. Silencing SALRNA3 in senescent fibroblasts prompts morphological changes and a decrease in cell numbers, consistent with increased apoptosis. Markers of apoptosis, such as cleaved PARP and elevated p53 levels, are also seen after SALRNA3 silencing. This suggests that SALRNA3 helps maintain survival in senescent cells. The specific downstream mediators and mechanistic partners of SALRNA3 remain unknown, and it has not yet been linked to any specific disease or therapeutic drug. Investigation into SALRNA1, SALRNA2, and SALRNA3 helps elucidate how lncRNAs can regulate the senescent phenotype and cell fate decisions, primarily influencing proliferation, apoptosis, and cell survival[3][1].
