Senescent cell antigen (SCA) refers to a set of molecular changes or specific antigens appearing on the surface of senescent cells. These antigens are recognized by the immune system and play roles in both the physiological clearance of aged cells and in disease contexts such as cancer and age-related disorders. The classic SCA is a glycosylated polypeptide related to band 3 protein, but other cell types may express different senescence-associated surface markers. Immune recognition via these antigens is central for physiological removal but may also contribute to inflammation if clearance fails. SCAs are being investigated as targets for cancer immunotherapy and other age-related diseases.
