Senescent cells expressing natural killer group 2 member D (NKG2D) ligands are a key target for immune surveillance, particularly by natural killer (NK) cells and certain T cell subsets. These ligands, including MICA, MICB, and ULBPs, act as "distress signals" on the surface of stressed, damaged, or senescent cells, marking them for recognition and elimination by the immune system via NKG2D receptor engagement.
