Overview

Sensory nerve conduction is the physiological process of transmitting electrical impulses along sensory neurons from peripheral receptors to the central nervous system (StatPearls, 2023). This process is fundamental for sensory perception, including the detection of pain, temperature, and touch. In clinical settings, sensory nerve conduction is assessed using Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) to measure parameters such as Sensory Nerve Action Potential (SNAP) amplitude and Sensory Conduction Velocity (SCV) (Mayo Clinic, 2023). While not a discrete molecular target, sensory nerve conduction is mediated by specific proteins like voltage-gated sodium channels (e.g., Nav1.7, Nav1.8) and potassium channels, which are the actual targets for pharmacological agents like local anesthetics and anticonvulsants (NIH, 2022). Impairments in this process are indicative of peripheral neuropathies, such as those caused by diabetes or physical compression (StatPearls, 2023). Monitoring these conduction parameters is essential for diagnosing nerve damage and evaluating the efficacy of neuroprotective therapies.

Mechanism of action

Sensory nerve conduction is a physiological process rather than a molecular target; drugs modulate this process by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels to block signal propagation or by binding to calcium channel subunits to reduce excitatory neurotransmission.
