Sensory nerve endings in the skin are specialized anatomical structures formed by the terminal branches of peripheral somatic afferent neurons. They include both free and encapsulated forms that detect various environmental stimuli—such as mechanical pressure/touch, temperature changes, and painful stimuli—and relay this information to the central nervous system via dorsal root ganglia and spinal cord pathways. The main types include mechanoreceptors (touch/pressure), thermoreceptors (temperature), nociceptors (pain), with further specialization into distinct morphological forms like Merkel’s disks, Meissner’s corpuscles, Ruffini endings, Pacinian corpuscles, and free nerve endings distributed throughout different layers of the epidermis and dermis. These structures play essential roles in somatosensation but do not represent individual molecular targets suitable for direct pharmacological intervention.
