Septin-1 (SEPTIN1)

Target
SEPTIN1
Molecular classification
Cytoskeletal protein, GTPase, P-loop NTPase family

Overview

Septin-1 (SEPTIN1) is a cytoskeletal, filament-forming GTPase that is a member of the septin family, which is widely conserved among eukaryotes except plants. Septins form homo- and heterooligomeric complexes that assemble into filaments, rings, and higher-order structures crucial for various cellular processes, including cytokinesis, membrane compartmentalization, and scaffold formation for protein localization. Septin-1 participates in cell division, cellular morphology maintenance, and possibly in neuronal integrity by its association with tau protein and neurofibrillary tangle formation, implicating a disease role in Alzheimer's disease. SEPTIN1 has been identified as a potential cancer antigen in breast cancer, but it is not currently a routine established therapeutic target nor associated with specific drugs.
