Septin 14 pseudogene 4 (SEPTIN14P4) is a pseudogene—an inactive or nonfunctional DNA sequence derived from the SEPTIN14 gene. Pseudogenes, by definition, are segments of DNA that resemble functional genes but contain mutations or other sequence alterations that prevent them from producing functional proteins[1][4][6]. Like other pseudogenes, SEPTIN14P4 does not encode an active protein and is not considered a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other classical drug target. While most pseudogenes are considered molecular "dead ends," there is emerging evidence that some can have regulatory impacts on cell biology, for example by acting as RNA decoys, influencing gene expression via microRNA competition, or occasionally by being sources of regulatory noncoding RNAs[2][3].
