Overview

Septin 14 pseudogene 6 (SEPTIN14P6) is a non-protein-coding pseudogene related to the septin 14 gene family. Pseudogenes like SEPTIN14P6 arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events but have lost their ability to encode functional proteins due to disabling mutations. While considered “junk DNA” in the past, mounting evidence indicates that some pseudogenes can be transcribed into RNA, sometimes exhibiting tissue-specific patterns. These RNA transcripts can modulate gene expression of their parent or related genes, for instance by acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) that sequester microRNAs, functioning as siRNA precursors, or affecting mRNA stability. Such roles have been described for other pseudogenes, especially in contexts like cancer[1][3]. However, there is no specific evidence for direct regulatory or pathological significance of SEPTIN14P6 itself in the available literature.

Biological functions

Possible regulation of gene expression by acting as miRNA decoy, antisense transcript, or via RNA interference; pseudogenes in general may influence the expression of protein-coding genes through RNA-based mechanisms

Disease associations

Other (Some pseudogenes have been shown to play regulatory roles in cancer and other diseases, but no specific evidence exists for a direct, disease-related functional role of SEPTIN14P6 itself)
