Septin-8 is a small GTP-binding cytoskeletal protein that assembles into filaments and higher-order structures in concert with other septins. It plays a critical role in maintaining cellular architecture, contributing to membrane compartmentalization, cytoskeletal integration, and the formation of diffusion barriers. SEPTIN8 is expressed in various human tissues, notably localizing to areas of cellular stress and observed in kidney tubule cells, where it colocalizes with both microtubules and actin filaments. Environmental stress, such as hypoxia, induces relocalization of SEPTIN8, highlighting its functional significance in cellular response mechanisms. Although the septin family is implicated in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, SEPTIN8’s direct therapeutic relevance remains unestablished.
