Serine beta-lactamases of Ambler class D, also known as oxacillinases (OXAs), are enzymes produced by certain bacteria that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. These enzymes hydrolyze the beta-lactam ring, a critical structure in these antibiotics, rendering them ineffective against bacterial cell wall synthesis. They use a serine residue (Ser-67) at the active site for catalysis.
Hydrolysis of the beta-lactam ring via a serine-mediated mechanism, forming an acyl-enzyme intermediate and releasing an inactivated antibiotic molecule.
